Even before the arrival of the PDQ machine, as far as consumers have been concerned making purchases via a card payment facility has been a painless process. We all became very accustomed to the manual swiping devices, which involved a quick call to the bank for authorisation. The customer got his goods quickly without having to hand over any cash!
The merchant however would then have to submit their paper sales vouchers to the acquiring bank and wait 2 weeks to receive their funds, so you can understand why many small businesses chose to ignore the world of card processing. Then came a device that changed everything, and it was “Pretty Darn Quick” for both the consumer and retailer, as it allowed the acquiring banks to “Process Data Quickly”. The PDQ machine was born.

A PDQ machine is simply a device used to process credit card and debit card transactions. Most consumers have seen them many times at both major retailers and smaller stores. It is likely the most common way to process credit card and debit card transactions at a retail business. The popularity of PDQ machines has skyrocketed in the past decade. They started to appear in national retail chains and have since grown to nearly every other type of retail business. In most cases, consumers themselves can swipe their cards through and handle the transaction without ever giving their cards to a store employee.
